DIY Plastic Storage Cube Rat Play Pen!

I’ve seen runs for Guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters but I’ve never seen someone make a rat run out of storage cubes. Typically I see people using the mesh style cubes but here in the UK we have some plastic and metal ones that I figured would be a neat idea to try to make into a rat run!

My budget at the end of the day was £20 total, and I spent £13 on a pack of storage cubes off of Ebay:

Ensure that you don’t get the shoe version as it’s much smaller!!

This video shows basic creation instructions and how to use the pieces to connect the shelves into this design. I hope it helps!

If you do happen to go with this idea, please take a picture and send it to me!! Or send it via Instagram and tag me so I can see what it looks like! I’d love to see what other people do and how they improve on this design! 😀

Wow you have solved not only my art photography conundrum ( needing a light box) but also a rat proof play pen problem! One Of my rats is very naughty and gets out of the cardboard playpens. I’ll be hunting for these storage cubes now. Many thanks.

  3. blood and silver on October 3, 2020 at 5:03 am

you don’t really need the base, there’s not enough space for them to squeeze under and if you use fleece you’re fine. you can use the extra panels to make the pen bigger

This video is a life saver. My rats are 5-6 months old now and even though their cage is big enough for another rat, they’ve got so much energy i just want to give them some more space, but they climb wire so fast i needed another solution🤣

Okay, here’s my problem. I ordered two sets from Amazon so I could make it taller. My mischievous little ladies liked to jump out. So now it is three tall. But my problem is now miss smarty pants "Eowyn" can jump and grab onto where the two pieces come together and climb out the rest of the way. I was thinking maybe line the inside with a tarp or something like it. Any thoughts?

I built this exact set up, my rats jumped over it no problems. I didnt even have anything inside so will be ordering more to make taller ><.

Hello! very informative video, thank you so much. I am thinking about getting those as a storage for my clothes instead of a wardrobe. Since you have them in your office and for those cute pets do you think it would be stable enough to build it up like 2 meters high?
    Thank you very much

I have been looking for a none chewable fencing for my girls. I have seen YouTube videos of cardboard boards being used witch I use but my rats chew threw them. This is exactly what I have been looking for to bad they are way to expensive in the US (60$) for 9 cubes but thank u very mush for sharing something different for rats.
