HOMEMADE DOG FOOD | healthy dog food recipe

We recently switched our 4-year old dog over from store-bought dog food to homemade dog food and Charlie could not be happier.

This is a great, well-rounded beginner recipe that is easy to make and can easily be scaled up and stored in the freezer. I really enjoy making fresh food for Charlie and hope to share more recipes soon!

Do you cook for your pets? I would love to hear from you in the comments below! Feel free to share all of your questions and tips.

1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large zucchini shredded
1 cup baby spinach finely chopped
1 cup shredded carrots
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 egg
3 cups cooked rice (I like using frozen brown rice)

Heat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add in the coconut oil and turkey and sauté until it is browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the zucchini, spinach, carrots, and turmeric. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.

Turn off the heat and crack in the egg. Let the egg cook in the hot food, mix it around to ensure it is mixed through and cooked through.

Stir in the rice until everything is well combined. Cool and serve!

*Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Makes 6-7 cups.

*This is a vet-approved dog food recipe but please note that I am not a licensed veterinarian, and all opinions are my own. Please consult with your veterinarian before switching your dog to a homemade diet.

    You absolutely can add kale
to your dogs diet. Along with cabbage, celery, beets, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. If your dog is allergic to grains, you can swap out rice for quinoa and oats. For added protein, you can add chia and flax seeds.

  2. Daniel Esterhuyse on April 27, 2022 at 4:54 am

Dogs should NOT eat cooked food, no grain based food

I just discovered this video! I already love your channel, but now I’m going to get a puppy, and I’ve been looking into canine nutrition. This video is so great! I’d love more! (Have you tried using quinoa in any doggy recipes?) I’ll check through your other videos to see if you’ve already posted other dog food videos. Thank you, Dani!

If commenters would like to know more about feeding their dogs (and cats) naturally then I recommend the Australian book "Bones and Raw Food Diet" by vet Dr Ian Billinghurst. It’s available on four different online book stores. It’s popular in Australia and several companies make food in this style to buy in store and from online suppliers.

I have been doing this for years. When I switched my did went to a healthy weight and his coat and skin improved.

I saw the turmeric, that was a great idea I’ll Be using it.

I also noticed when I switched to cooking for my dogs. They produce less poop. And when they do poop they have rice in it still. And it doesn’t burn the grass like it used to

I think you need to do a little research young lady dogs are descendants of wolves wolves are carnivores where do not eat rice grains potatoes starches vegetables very few you are so wrong good luck poisoning your dogs and everybody else is listening to this oh and tell me where a wolf or nek9 gets a microwave or stove to cook their food on they eat raw diet

  10. handsome Dan on April 27, 2022 at 5:09 am

Awesome vid! But I heard brown rice is too hard for them to digest vs white. Depends on the doggie I guess. Great video thanks so much

Trying to get my dog off of pure kibble from Iams. Into a more healthy diet. He’s kind of plump but still is full of good fight and energy. Thanks so much for the info, going to try some of your suggestions.

  12. Lynn Johnson on April 27, 2022 at 5:10 am

Thank you for this video. I do have a question about two ingredients. Vets say Kale is good for dogs and rice has arsenic in it, and dogs can digest white rice better than brown. So I am confused on the kale and rice. I do realize all vets have different opinions.

Add an omega 3 oil and some one or pasture raised egg shell ( ground) I buy canned sardines in water from Costco and put a couple in one meal per day. I love turmeric and do the same. I also get organs like hearts and livers from the butcher to add to the food at the very end, like how you did with the egg as they shouldn’t be overcooked.

I make my dogs food! They love it!

  21. 6079 Smith W on April 27, 2022 at 5:20 am

You have eggs on that list, eggs are perfectly safe and healthy for dogs

  22. Karen Schmidt on April 27, 2022 at 5:21 am

This is not a balance meal for a dog and definitely not for a puppy. A vet might have approved this for a shot term but it is lacking nutrition for a long term meal plan, and rice is highly inflammatory for dogs and full of carbs that they don’t need. Please consult a dog nutritionist or do lots of research before embarking on feeding your dog a home-cooked meal. You can do more damage than good if you do not make it a complete and balance meal( which this is not).

Love it! I am gonna try it!!!!!!

  31. Laurali James on April 27, 2022 at 5:32 am

It’s good, but no riice or lots of spinach as they are very high oxalate they make Kidney and Golblodder Stones they obstruct urinary tract are very painful just like in people. And not cooked
    Fresh means like hunting fresh
You do not need to cook the turkey specially that long. You may start the very loe heat, don’t stir as soon it starts sizzling about 2 or 3 minutes you take of heat pour in a bowl let the heat in it cook by itself i would cook spinac if i put some but only half other veggies steamed. Raw eggs are good, you forgot the raw chicken bones or bobe meal, or egg shells which is essential for calcium & minerald

  32. BRENDA BRIGGS on April 27, 2022 at 5:33 am

My dogs have gone to Dog Heaven, years ago, One was 13, the other 14 yrs. Old- I always made them their food- I’de make a big pot of rice, Then brown abt. 10 lb. Of ground. Chuck, some salt, pepper, seasonings, carrot, etc., They never got sick, were healthy, and boiling-over with mischief and fun- I think regular dog food is crap- Make up a batch, and keep in fridge in individual containers- Easy! – ( I imagine dog heaven as, plenty of squirrels to chase, eat whatever they want, all the cats have rubber claws & teeth, lots of fun )-
