How much food to feed your puppy? | Veterinary Approved

Hey guys! In this video I will give you great visuals of how much your puppy needs to eat everyday. Puppies need to eat three times a day. No if’s and’s or but’s.. THREE times a day, until they are about 4 months old. Puppies that are “Toy Breeds” may eat 4-6 small meals a day to meet their nutritional needs. Examples of Toy Breeds are chihuahuas, yorkies, Pomeranians, shitzus and miniature schnauzers and more. Large breed puppies (labradors, dobermans, boxers, Australian shepherd ect) are just fine eating 3 big meals a day. In this video I show you a chart that will tell you exactly how many cups to feed your puppy depending on their weight. If you follow that chart you won’t go wrong with feeding your puppy the right amount of food. If you are ever in doubt just always feed your puppy more food than less. In this video you will meet Luke who is a 4 month old Aussie Doodle, he is 20lbs and eats about 3-4 cups of food, three times a day.
PLEASE share this video with any friends who are getting a new puppy and need to know how much to feed them! I hope this video helped you!

I have a 10 lb blue French bull dog born August 31st we’ve been feeding only wet food 1 big can a day but we want to try dry and wet mixed he will literally not eat dry food hates it he will starve hisself if we even try but we’ve been feeding purina pro plan puppy (turkey) and he’s having digestive and bathroom wise issues with Diahrea and throwing up and were about to switch to Hill science …after 1 day of 3 small sample cans of a prescription digestion chicken stew(btw he is in love) these problems all disappear which as a vet I’m sure your aware is usually not the case but he did awesome like a total 180 no loose stools and no vomiting the new vet I’m going to claims there’s no way it’s an allergy but I definitely feel like it may be after watching the difference 1 day has made but they gave me a can for adult dogs is that ok or is there an option for puppies that is a stew and aids in good digestion/sensitive tummy iv been told I chose a boujie Breed by the vet and that they do tend to have many problems but given no advice

What if I feed him twice a day but the portions equal to 3 meals?

  7. Magdalena Liew on February 12, 2022 at 5:26 pm

Thank you so much Dr. My family brought home a 8 weeks old Maltese 2 days ago. Was told by breeder to feed half cup kibbles a day
Half of the half cup at 9am n remaining of the other half at 9pm. No wonder my puppy cries so much after 12 midnight. Poor little darling. She is not eating enough. Thank you so much for your helpful information. I will increase the amount from half cup initially to 1 cup now n separate the 1 cup to 3 feeding times. Am I doing it right?

What size is the measuring cup?

  11. lindajonesartist on February 12, 2022 at 5:30 pm

This was not very helpful. Different brands of dog food recommend different amounts of their products. Some have higher calorie content per cup than others. Secondly, not all dog food comes neatly in a can or in kibble-sized pieces that fit neatly in a measuring cup. As an example, when my dogs were puppies this past year, I fed them Stella & Chewy’s Perfectly Puppy. It doesn’t come in tiny kibble pieces, or neatly in individual serving cans. It comes as patties. Some brands of dog food now come in bricks that they call nuggets. In order to feed your puppy the right amount, not only do you have to match the serving size with how the brand packages their food, but you also need to be aware of the calorie content so that you can gauge whether your more active puppy or less active puppy needs a different amount of food, or how many additional calories they may be eating in training treats and dental chews and other things so that you’re not over-feeding your puppy and starting them down the path towards obesity. Also, dry kibble is losing popularity. People are discovering that it’s designed to be convenient for the owner, but isn’t necessarily the best for puppies, especially puppies that don’t drink enough water. Pre-soaking it with something may add additional calories that need to be taken into consideration. In other words, knowing how many calories your puppy needs makes more sense than a measuring cup.

thank you!!’ I had been thinking we were feeding my very small maltese puppy too little and now ik that she needs more food per serving, thank you so much!!!

Edit: i have a question, my puppy was sick for the past week, shes better now and we gave her medication that the vet recommended, she also gave us a supplement that looked like the one you showed. My parents don’t give it to my puppy anymore, but should we still give her daily?

  22. Living 2Day on February 12, 2022 at 5:40 pm

My puppy up to 6 months demanded 3 feedings, then overnight she decided to only to eat 2xs a day. She gained 2 lbs a week … so my 10 lb puppy now weighs 48 lbs. She began eating 25 lbs kibble a month. Now eats 40 lbs a month. It seems she is eating more than prescribe and is an all muscle lean puppy … strong enough to pull me to the ground and drag.

Make sure what breed you decide on you can handle. I do not recommend an ACD puppy unless you are a professional trainer and live on a ranch/farm. Probably better off with an ACD adult over 2 years of age. This is coming from a 60 year dog owner who trained all my dogs from small breeds to GSD packs. This puppy as loving as she is, common to breed have a lot … and I do mean a lot of behavior problems.

Hi everyone, I’ve read on many pet guides as well as heard from many veterinarians that the amount of wet food should replace a portion of the recommended daily feeding amount on the dry puppy food bag rather than in addition to the dry food amounts. In this video, she gives the wet food on top of the dry food amounts. Isn’t this wrong?

Hi I have a one year old cocker spaniel and I am trying to find the best food to give him without him getting sick

  27. Hillside Cocker Spaniels on February 12, 2022 at 5:49 pm

Wow. One of the worse kibble is the market. Science Diet , is a slow death for any K9

  28. Klouse on February 12, 2022 at 5:52 pm

This video is trash. As a veterinarian you should be explaining the caloric need for puppies. Instead you just show your subscribers how to follow a chart that is ONLY printed on one specific brand of puppy food. Some owners prefer to feed their dogs raw diets and this does nothing to help with that. You’re just teaching a bunch of halfwits how to portion out food that is clearly printed on a chart. Dislike.

I tried trout and lamb, she does not want to eat… We are now giving her table scraps and she is not gaining any weight. She is a Am Staff puppy..I am now gonna try only beef adult food bc there is nothing for puppy allergies.😡

  31. Drifting Unicorn on February 12, 2022 at 5:55 pm

That amount for that ,3lb puppy looks like a lot, my puppy wouldn’t eat all that, she eats more like 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day…

Can you give me some pointers on how much kibble to feed a 16 week Lab pup? He weighs approximately 25 pounds and seems a bit slim for his age. Thank you

  35. LoveYashua on February 12, 2022 at 5:56 pm

Love your channel and the useful info u have to share. I have two whippets 9 weeks old and we were told by the breeder to feed him 1 cup of food TID and the last meal we offer is at 7:30 but breakfast is not until 7-8:30 am , isn’t this too log from the last meal till breakfast? We are a bit unsure what to do because we wake them up to use the bathroom but sometimes it takes a little while to get them settled back to sleep as they can be whiney and just thinking they could be hungry.

Ok question? I just got 2 maltipoo boys 3 mo old and if I incorporate the wet food, will their bowel movements be really soft? Right now, I’m weening them off beneful and adding Blue Royal to the beneful because I was told by the previous owner they would get bad diarrhea if I just immediately incorporate the Blue Royal. Please help😩 Thank you

  44. Dobbies Revenge on February 12, 2022 at 6:09 pm

Hills is fucking horrible food same with Purina. The only reason vets recommend these two brands is because a majority of vet schools are sponsored by these two brands. Feeding your dog kibble is like you eating McDonald’s everyday. Just feed tour dog raw food or cook your dog meals

  45. Staci Jennings on February 12, 2022 at 6:10 pm

Thanks you so much, very helpful. I have a 3lhs, 5 weeks old pitbull. I feed him twice a day. I know your video says 3 times at 8 weeks, if I heard correctly. Wanted to know if that’s ok, being at 5 week?
