How Much Should You Feed Your Cat?

Cat owners have often asked how much food should they feed their cat. Pet-Care Advisor, Valerie discusses how this is not a question that has one simple answer for every cat or every food. Different cats may have different caloric needs and each food offers feeding guidelines which can vary a great deal.
Valerie offers some tips on how to establish how much your cat should be fed and also, should you feed dry food or canned food or both.

Cats are fussy im just working that out..and this calories thing is confusing can’t u give a weight in how many grams of food per day???

  2. Nathan Ridings on August 14, 2020 at 11:34 pm

The labels should have adequate information to determine the calorie content. Just read the label and do the math. Take you a minute or two instead of hours on the phone. As a pet food channel that would be a good skill to learn and teach.

Don’t listen to your veterinarian when it comes to food. All they know is what the pet food company representatives tell them. Go to feline-nutrition.org for accurate feline nutrition information.

well i`m confused, my cat weighs 19 pounds, we give him at 7 am daily his normal bowl of dry food , around 9 am his bowl completly empty, ( around the same quantity of the blue pink bag dish on your video) why is that ? and my cat probably is from another planet because he drinks a lotttttttttttttttt of water, he is a Toxido Cat 4 years old.

  8. dolphinsc1 on August 14, 2020 at 11:39 pm

Dang. That looks like way too much dry and way too much wet. 2-3 cans per day? I don’t think so.

Cats are never full if you keep their pot full all day they’ll still eat it and follow you when you go to the fridge.

  17. Will Dwyer on August 14, 2020 at 11:49 pm

Dry food is unfit for feline consumption. Obligate carnivores get most of their hydration from the moisture in their food. The 10% water in dry kibble isn’t enough. That’s why cats who eat dry kibble end up with urinary problems.

We don’t free feed our 2 cats, we have a Bengal he weighs about 8 pds. And our Savannah is about 16 pds. They get 1/3 cup of taste of the wild dry 3 times per day between them not each and 2 tbsp’s of wet food each and they maintain a healthy weight and are active. If I went by what the bag and can said, they would be elephants not cats.

I have a seven month old cat, I think I am overfeeding him because he definitely looks like he has gotten fat in just a month of rescuing him. What is the correct amount to feed? I think I am feeding too much and too frequently. I give breakfast wet cat food mixed with kibble. then I fill up a bowl of dry kibble so he can eat it all day, and then at night I do another half a can of wet cat food mixed with dry food, and then he will wake up at 3 AM and eat some more. LOL. I am feeding a lot because they say kittens need to eat more. What is the correct amount of dry kibble I should get, half a cup? Or less than that. Should I only feed him twice a day?
