Christopher—–Best to check in your area with therapy dog testing and go without your dog and see the testing for yourself, thats what I did to better get a idea what I needed to train my dog on, my Rottweiler has been a therapy dog for over 2 years and loves doing it as I do, she is also my service dog. Check with these 2 organizations, TDI international and TDink, both are great, testing can be brutal so be prepared.

  9. Lindsay Lopez on April 14, 2022 at 5:10 pm

I’m a speech therapist in New York City, with one dog and an interest in acquiring another to train as a therapy dog.  Our 1st dog is VERY obedient, but is a bit too interested in other dogs.  I’m wondering if I should stick with a herding breed type of dog when going to the animal shelter, such as the dogs you have shown here in the video.  I prefer to adopt.  Any suggestions?

Very interested in learning what I would need to do to learn what I need to do. My focus would possibly be with riding therapy on horses. Do you have any you would reccomend to possibly lean more in that direction. I work with disabled now, and they are all wanting very much to be around my animals. As I am writing this I am listening to your in’s and outs. Thank you!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

This video is 8 years old and the testing and certification requirements are very different.
    She mentioned CGC test
This teat no longer certifies dogs for therapy dog work. Therapy Digs International and several other organizations both national and local do. The requirements vary as well. Check with these oeganizations.

A nice video! And love the use of positive reinforcement. However I do not agree with the calm demeanor requirement. They need to be calm and friendly for visits but I have seen many a high energy dog excel at therapy with the right program of exercise and rears-based earning. My first therapy dog was high energy but we exercised him well before our visits. He was beloved. He was so outstanding a national award is given annually in his remembrance.

    A Shitzu? Oh, you’re screwed.

Just kidding! You can train just about any dog anything. Just be calm and patient. Above all Stay Consistent! Make sure everybody in his/her life is supporting and reinforcing the training and it’ll be a snap.

I have a few questions, the next dog I get I want to train it to be a therapy dog but my parents would NOT tolerate a dog to be housetrained , but i might be able to get it in the house every one and a while and potty train it. would this work? also how old do you have to be to be the trainer and takes it places? They just need CGC? My boy got that at 6 months. He has all those skills learned. I wanted to start a program back home to help children with reading. What other titles does he need
