While hornbills have a mutualistic hunting relationship with adult mongooses, they have also been known to eat vertebrates the size of these pups. The bold mongoose pups don’t seem to have any fear of this potential predator. Lynda Sharpe, a behavior ecologist, says that mongooses will lie on their backs to invite another mongoose to wrestle. While it may look like it’s playing dead, the mongoose is most likely trying to lure the hornbill to play. Both behaviors are incredibly novel … and also incredibly funny.

As long as they don’t try this with a marabou stork, or an eagle, or even a ground hornbill. Wikipedia: Southern ground hornbill "They forage on the ground, where they feed on reptiles, frogs, snails, insects and mammals up to the size of hares."

  11. Grakniir on December 8, 2021 at 12:23 pm

Is this sped up a smidge? I’ve put it at 0.75 speed, and it looks more natural, but maybe it’s just cos they’re all small

  12. Victory Mansions on December 8, 2021 at 12:24 pm

Me and my mates in school used to do this hand walking over the table while saying mongoose, then turn our hands upside down like playing dead. I knew that they did this, but I’d never seen it before. Totally hilarious.

The voice of lady tempts me to think how beautiful she is?

  28. GhDr on December 8, 2021 at 12:36 pm

The hornbill is a beautiful, sweet, and harmless bird. It has a legendary sound which is synonymous with East Africa in my mind. Mongoose never plays dead, they are known to fight or flight and surely will gang up on an adult human is attacked when the numbers are on their side. Subadult mongoose on the other hand are unpredictable. Although I have them visit in my backyard in my cabin I have never seen that behavior before.

  29. ミキタン on December 8, 2021 at 12:36 pm

stop it you guys. you dont know the mongoose body language. I do.It’s their "come here and hug me" gesture.

  37. Ghost Samaritan on December 8, 2021 at 12:45 pm

Does that mean the mongoose (mongeese?) considers the bird a part of the family?

  38. Marigold Gatus on December 8, 2021 at 12:45 pm

Nature really has it’s smart ways on how to balance itself. Even these mongoose pups can make some drama just to outsmart their prey or stay away from a predator.

Weasels are a ferocious and fearless lot. Giant otters will take on crocs, badgers will fight leopards, a pack of mongooses can protect themselvds from a pack of wolves, and the list goes on.

These mongooses are fearless! In fact, some species of mongoose will boldly attack venomous snakes such as cobras. What do you think about these playful mongoose pups?
