Thank you for the books
I have been canning meat for my dogs and cats for years to top off their kibble. Chicken thighs are the best, and usually cheapest, because I take off the skin and can the thighs whole. The pressure canner softens the bones so they can be mashed up with fingers to include with the meat.
You should definitely consult your vet to see what they recommend for your pet as far as food goes. Every pet is different.
We’re all out of wet food. Its bad at the store. We thought this was not going to happened for our pet’s. We thought it was going to happened humans at first.
Soft-boiled eggs are a big hit for dogs.
Chicken thighs, livers, and gizzards are cheap proteins.
My dog will eat anything if we run out of dog food. She’s ok. My cats are different. I have one that won’t eat anything but dry cat food. So running out would be more serious for him. I try to keep extra food and litter.
Truthfully I think where ppl were not working and getting unemployment caused this shortage.
I’ve been fighting this problem for a few years now.
Found a great dog food recipe and my dog loves it. Has eggs and ground egg shells in it. Very healthy!
My dog is raw fed. He eats 5 pounds of raw meat and bones per day. Luckily I don’t depend on grocery stores for most of it. But when covid started I got worried. So I filled the dogs freezer, bought freeze dried raw as a back up, and a couple large bags of kibble as a back up for the back up. In a shtf situation, they can be omnivores and eat pretty much the same things you are, with a few exceptions.
Great advice! We do this for our dog and he’s very healthy, never has been sick and seven years old.
my problem is my mommy dog died a month ago her little girl is still here with me and I have gone through five different kinds of dog food and she still refuses to eat I’ve tried to make homemade dog food and she still won’t eat can somebody give me a heads up on what to do to save my little baby girl, Other than paying $30 for a name brand dog food that she may or may not eat I am stumped
Meat. Dogs are as smart as there owners. Feed them meat! Cranberries? Peas, carrots have snuck into pet foods by veggie morons that think if it’s good for them it’s good for pets.
I have pieces of meat in my freezer for my dog . Although I have stored dry food for him .
Hello 👋
Yeah, it’s here too! Great topic it’s concerning and an ongoing challenge! Will start making some food and try it out. My cat is finicky
Same issue in northwest Georgia
I was just at kroger’s today. Not one can of regular size cans of cat food. Then I looked at the dry food. It looks like it’s beginning to dwindle away too, but as fast. The dry food was more expensive than before.
Want to know why the pet food is being ripped off the shelf because people are panicked buying hoarding and not sharing I work in a retail company where we can’t even keep bird seed on the floor even pallets of it is being ripped off and being put into carts where people are not sharing thinking that the birds are going to starve it’s just a fear tactic
Many years ago when I was a full time student/ divorced mom surviving on a very small child support check( supplemented by a bit of money from babysitting other people’s children in my home on the weekends)… my 5 year old daughter found two scraggly and starving kittens( not newborn but still smallish). Since I could barely afford to feed myself and daughter I fed the kittens stale bread with the juice from our canned tuna poured over it. They loved it and THRIVED. Their coats were glossy and they were overall just very healthy cats. When I had saved enough money (after about a year) to take them both in for a vet and shots visit the vet kept remarking on how great they looked, how nice and lean they were( he said he usually saw pets that were far too heavy)… when I told him what I had been feeding them because I couldn’t afford “ cat food”… he said
“ keep it up, they look better that 95 percent of the cats I see on a daily basis”…
My local stores look the same for the cat food aisle. I buy the 60 count can Friskies at Sam’s.
Wow that is bad. Here in iowa its not lowclike that. I do see that the shelves are getting less and less as each month goes by. This month i couldnt even buy at least a dozen items that i never had a problem to get in the past. The lowest is dairy and fresh vegetables. God bless you Jinne

I’ve been trying to stock up on pet food for a year. One thing I learned is chicken feed doesn’t keep well. I lost 4 bags to mold, and they were only about 6 months old. We ended up planting comfrey bulbs all over the yard. Chickens can eat them plus they have tons of medicinal purposes for humans. We also have dogs. I stock up on kibble, but we also save and freeze all the parts of the deers my husband brings home. All the scraps we won’t eat get saved for the dogs. Also I figure as long as we can keep the chickens in good health, the dogs can eat the extra eggs.
Great conversation. I’ll be stocking up today. I’m fortunate to have about 5 stores near me plus a couple of pet stores. I’m also looking up recipes for soft cat food now and will add those ingredients to my pantry as well as the recipes to my prep binder. Thanks for the reminder, she’s picky!
I was so surprised to see and buy a can of dog food for 99 cents, it was 88 cents last week 😱 I bought 10 of them before it gets to $1.99
That is how it is in Southeastern Virginia, been that way for months.
A vet in Canada has a you tube channel that shows you how and what to use for making your own dog food. Veterinary Secrets. Also has many how to do first aid on your dog and cat and other holistic do at home. Very informative!!
After this cat, passes on I’m truly finished with animals, our cat is a soft food cat, and it’s hard to find her favorite food, all the time when I do find it I stock up and even cut her down by 1 can a day, these animals don’t understand.
My mom used to make gravy to put on dry dog food for our older dog…….I don’t know if that was good or bad but Rusty loved it!
Dogs are pretty good with anything you give them, regarding safe fruits and veggies. Cats, however, are obligate carnivores, so they don’t eat many veggies or fruit. Just keep that in mind if you’re supplementing for your fur babies
I have lots of pet food on hand, and am going to put some in mylar bags. But, I also make my own pet food for my small dog, he looks far healthier now, than he was when I got him after his owner died. I give him salmon, rice, veggies, eggs etc. Most kibbles have toxic ingredients and tons of preservatives. I eat Ezekiel bread and he likes that toasted with butter and an egg. Yes, he eats better than many humans. In Scotland and the north of England it was common for farm dogs to be fed porridge. There are lots of human foods that are suitable for dogs, but never allow them to have grapes, chocolate, onions or raisens, they are all toxic to dogs.
Since I’ve been seeing the shortages as much as I have when I go and buy one. Bag of dog food I buy another one right now I’ve got 10 5 gallon buckets and I rotate them like I rotate my can good this is what people need to start doing for their pets
Very good advice ~ I will be making home-made doggie treats soon ~ I always thought that peanut butter was bad for dogs…apparently not in small amounts ~ also baked pumpkins bars are great for doggie treats. As far as the meals….good thing I added a few big bags to the pantry!
Do you have a recipe??
It took me a month to get my prescription dog food from chewy, I was panicking. Food shelves here in Vt are very low for cat food. Infuriates me. My children are grown and on own so our pets are our life and when it comes to this nonsense I get so angry. Take away my food but don’t take away my pets food. What a time we live in and so many don’t even see it, and just keep going about there busy work schedules and careless spending and arent even thinking of preparing.
This COVID-19 thing is becoming more and more apocalyptic every year.
Thanks Jinne.
cats are a lot pickier with a less diverse diet than dogs…I think it is easier to feed dogs human food. However, I do have a lot of canned fish and poultry if we need to use that sometimes. They also like raw and cooked eggs.
yeah right you gotta have a Chihuahua that I have she is pickier than pic I’m telling you she won’t eat her food I’ve tried nine different kinds I’ve even tried to make her food she still won’t eat it and this girl can’t live on cucumbers alone help me.. I’ve tried all those things that you said to cook up she still won’t eat it
It’s hard to find cat food anywhere
A friend of mine has an elderly dog that gets digestive problems. The Vet has her mix cooked rice in with his food daily. He has done fine with it. Thanks for the info.
Tons of basic recipes on pet food recipes, if you need one to follow. If you’re not sure, look up some recipes and write them down..try a few. You’ll find it’s cheaper than dog food. My daughter always has a crockpot going ..of something for her pup.
I’ve got 2 cats. I always buy bags of kibble (cat biscuits) and put them in the freezer to extend their shelf life.. they are more or less a complete meal. Also I do the same with Whiskas pouches, the gravy pouches freeze ok but the gelatine ones not so good. When the SHTF I really don’t think they’ll be too bothered..
Dogs will eat ANYTHING – happily. Cats ? Not so much. BIG problem here. 🙁
When we run out of dog or cat food..And if we have no more preps to eat because we run out for ourselfs..Time to Eat the cat.
As a kid we never had pre-made cat food or any type of pet food maybe some dry. my mom used to like going to the lake and with a cane pole and fish for bream. She place some in plastic bags while they were still alive and just put them in the freezer. Then at supper time for the cats she take a couple of the fish from the freezer, put them in hot water and boil them just to thaw them out throw them on the ground for the cats. Our pets always ate good. I’ve got plenty of canned pet food and dry pet food in my preps, but I do go down to the river and catch brim and freeze it also. The cats are pretty good hunters themselves.
My grocery stores are full.
My vet says chicken and rice, green beans fills them up, great way to help pets lose weight
Poor cats! 😢😭
