PETSMART vs PETCO | Who has better SMALL ANIMAL care?

You guys really enjoyed the reptile version, so today we’re going to be looking at how PetSmart and Petco take care of their small animals. Of course all locations are different, but in general I feel like these stores are a good representation of most that I’ve been to. Which one do you think had the better care?

Support local pet shops not Petco or Petsmart.. they all buy from mills

  5. Pøtatø_Gacha on July 29, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Petsmart is best in my opinion , this is not always the case at all PetSmart’s but my local PetSmart takes good care of there hamsters, they feed them with a lot of variety and not just the same old pellets, they have a good amount of bedding but not the best but still better then other places. But this is just my opinion.

  6. Leah Lynn on July 29, 2021 at 1:08 pm

  8. Atalia’s World on July 29, 2021 at 1:09 pm

Petco was a little bit better with like the care and cleanliness while Petsmart had more variety and this is just my opinion😊

i work at another pet store, not as large as these but still fairy corporate. we all care about the animals we have so much, and honesty a lot get adopted by employees. we don’t have as large of a variety as these stores, but i can speak on some of the comments that i have seen more often. we currently have two guinea pigs, and one skinny pig (basically hairless little dude) and the two guinea pigs are housed together. we don’t have any other animals that are housed together besides fish obvs, and parakeets and finches. our guinea pigs are always provided with hay, and our hamsters have ample bedding, when you go to look for them you kind of have to dig around a bit because you can’t see them haha. something that we don’t love is the people who provide us animals don’t always provide us with multiple ferrets. our store isn’t that large, so i would only keep two ferrets at a maximum in our enclosure, but we often only get one. i feel bad because i know they are suppoused to have friends, so we try to socialize with them and give them love as often as possible. i know that when i close, i hold the ferret as i walk around and do the things i need to do to close. for our hermit crabs we always have many varieties of shells for them to choose from, and for all our reptiles we do animal care in the morning and evening, with us checking in between. i will say, my coworker who handles the fish most of the time is so so passionate about taking care of them. she used to have her own business breeding and selling fish, and just loves them so much. we recently had some that had babies and we have been diligently keeping tabs on the babies and trying to help them survive with their wonderful parents. some of our other stores near our location do not do a good job keeping their tanks clean, so sometimes she will go over there to clean the tanks and yell at the employees to do better. overall, we still get animals that have been raised and bred in factories and that’s something that most of us struggle with at the store. however, we all try to do our best to give the animals the love and care they deserve, and give as much information about care to their future families. i specifically did not want to work for a very large corporate pet store for some of the reasons i’ve seen expressed in the comments, and i pride the store i work at as being pretty good all things considered.

In Poland, we have a big pet-shop brand and there is a pretty good small pet care. EVERY (even soo young hamster) have their own big cage, with pretty big wheel, sand bath, good quality food, fresh water and a big hide. A have hamster from there and he is pretty calm and tame

  15. underthesea on July 29, 2021 at 1:17 pm

Just me but I kind of think PetSmart is a tiny bit better but they’re both really bad

  16. Duck man on July 29, 2021 at 1:17 pm

I now this was two years ago but the PetSmart in my state is mutch better they tell us the correct information and have bigger tanks at the back where they remove the animals for display in morning

  17. b3tt on July 29, 2021 at 1:18 pm

At least both the stores don’t keep multiple Serbian hamsters together

  18. Jericho llovee on July 29, 2021 at 1:18 pm

The Petco’s near me are much better than the Petsmarts, Petco offers more space and variety even though it’s more expensive.

  19. Aurora Null on July 29, 2021 at 1:19 pm

I know in my area the petsmart has really good care for their animals..while the petco doesnt…

  20. Princess Vars on July 29, 2021 at 1:20 pm

I’m probably going to adopt whatever doesn’t have better pet care so I can save the animals

  21. Bluemax1solo on July 29, 2021 at 1:22 pm

  22. Vibess_ on July 29, 2021 at 1:22 pm

  23. Qwidz on July 29, 2021 at 1:25 pm

both of their rat pet care is bad

  24. Priscilla Young on July 29, 2021 at 1:26 pm

I personally think petco has better animal care I was going to petsmart to get hermit crabs and I asked the lady if the had any she said no but when I went to look there where two alive and the rest were dead there was no food or water so I got them from petco instead

  25. IAmDoveAGAndIAmAFurryAndILoveSplatoonAndHorsesBRUH on July 29, 2021 at 1:30 pm

I haven’t realized how cheap the pets are at both shops!

  26. Beans_avi on July 29, 2021 at 1:31 pm

    They’re so cute

  27. doodoo on July 29, 2021 at 1:32 pm

When your local petsmart and Petco are literally ACROSS THE STREET FROM EACHOTHER

  28. Gwen Malfoy on July 29, 2021 at 1:35 pm

My petsmart is so nice to all the animals and very gentle, but the petco just grabs the animals and is very aggressive with them and it really annoys me so I only shop at petsmart

  30. Livvy Grossmann on July 29, 2021 at 1:37 pm

Definitely Petco. I went to PetSmart and saw that the hamsters and mice had WIRE WHEELS. And the Guinea Pigs didn’t have any hay!! However, a shop that takes care of their small animals better than BOTH of those shops is Pet Supplies Plus.

Well, I can tell you I will never buy another chinchilla from Petco ever again. Or any live animal. 1 day in and my little guy wasn’t acting right. Called the vet they recommended and was told no new patients accepted. Was given a couple numbers and ended up having to call around. Finally got one, but they weren’t concerned at all by his behavior. Vet said he’d be fine until his well check appointment. Last night he started laying in his side. I called around and no vets open. No emergency vet in the area with a small animal doctor. Emailed the vet we had an appointment at with video of chinchilla in his present state (at the time). Woke up to the dog whining around Wicket’s cage. Vet called at 7:30am and asked about him. I sent video again and explained behaviors as best I could. I did his daily feeding and water change. He got the zoomies, then went back to his hiding spot. He never did eat or drink. Started acting weird and unsteady. He let me hold him, which is way out of character. Frantically called around and ended up driving him to an emergency vet 1 1/2hours away, where he died 10 minutes in the door. I had my baby less than a week. Our dog knew something was wrong and tried to tell me. I’m so heartbroken and devastated. Petco needs to stop selling sick animals.

Can you the gerbil at PetSmart?

  33. Sophia’s Fanfic Network on July 29, 2021 at 1:38 pm

    Petco honestly

  34. lel on July 29, 2021 at 1:38 pm

guys never buy from petsmart. im about to expose them but, they dont give a shit about those poor animals. where they get there animals from the workers take a old or sick or dying pet and out them in a bag then wack them against a table. they will grow infections and very severe ones. they leave dead animals in the cage. they dont sell good products for you animals. they use wheels for the hamster made of mesh medal wich can hurt there lims. they sell pine bedding witch can be very bad for them. etc.

  37. iiKayxlia on July 29, 2021 at 1:41 pm

I honestly think both aren’t that good. They cages are WAY to small for these animals and especially for the hamsters! If you look at them they are just laying there when hamsters usually are always doing something or burrowing. And for the guinea pigs both places need a LOT more hay and a lot more space.

Tbh, I always trust Petco more for my small pet stuff. It isn’t great, but it’s the only place in my area that stocks my bun’s favorite feed and toys.

  49. CreeperawwQUACK- on July 29, 2021 at 2:01 pm

the petco by me has small animals but they are kinda mean and sometimes they have fur falling out but petsmart is an all female store but they have some males and they have realy polite animals also they give the correct information.

  50. Feelin' All Rat on July 29, 2021 at 2:03 pm

Petco will now cover vet bill for first 30 days if rat/mouse is sick….it’s via their own vet, but you do get to get your same pet back after treatment (vs before, when sent to vet upon RETURN of sick animal)
