(May 23)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Pet owners whose pets were sickened or killed by tainted pet food have settled their lawsuit over the contaminated food.The companies that were sued will pay $24 million to pet owners in the U.S. and Canada.A lawyer for pet owners says that money will be used to reimburse pet owners for the cost of veterinary bills and cremation or burial.It all goes back the the biggest-ever pet food recall in 2007. That’s when hundreds of pets got sick or died from eating the food made by Menu Foods. The company makes dog and cat food under 90 brand names. The food was recalled because it contained wheat gluten imported from China that was contaminated with melamine.The company says any money left over after claims are paid will be given to animal welfare charities.
