My opinion is the mid engine limits it to a two seat car. Two seat cars just don’t sell well as a primary car. Corvette can pull it off easy, because it was only 2 seat only either way and usually a second or third car . Ford Thunderbird did the opposite. Started as a 2 seat sports car and then thought we really need a 4 seat car. Then for 2002 built it in a 2 seat version and it flopped despite the hype. Probably because it was just to boring. So I just googled and they only came with a 255 hp 3.9 liter engine( which it was okay but nothing to brag about even back then) The retro styling of the car was a fail in many ways as well, that is as I look at it in 2021( maybe in 2002 people liked it) Ford needed to think "we are going to try to beat Corvette at the track" for the two seat car to have any hope of surviving, and in 2002 that car was not up to the task in any way shape or form. That whole concept screamed for something like the supercharged 4v modular and a 6 speed manual transmission and a year or two later it was in the Mustang! That means they had it and were playing with it for years before that. They just cheeped out on a car in a niche market. The Fiero’s "success" If you want to call it that , delivered on what it was trying to be. I owned a few and they were great on MPG, power , brakes and styling of the time, though I quickly realized just how much I would not want a two seat car unless I had more than one. The mid engine design of that car sucked in the winter, so I always parked it for the winter, and drove a winter beater.

  13. Peter Enns on July 21, 2021 at 8:34 pm

Ten minutes on the great, inexpensive mid-engined sports cars of the past and no Fiat X/19 🙁

  14. pan vomacka on July 21, 2021 at 8:36 pm

Nice video as always, just 2 things to add:
    1. The mid-engined moment of inertia has bigger benefit in handling than transferring power to the road. It is mainly used for neutral behavior in cornering.
    2. A new, relatively cheap mid-engined car has just been announced. It was in development since 2016 in Britain. Search for Wells Vertige.
But I admit it is still not as cheap as the MR2 was. Honda should resurrect it!

  15. Jo LC on July 21, 2021 at 8:36 pm

I guess I’m in the automotive minority to say that I prefer an electric sports car anyway, since they are typically faster, have better weight distribution, and of course there’s the better for that you don’t have as many parts to worry about in regards to running and maintaining the car itself. But for those who prefer a loud engine / exhaust note, and who love the idea of getting their hands dirty by working on an internal combustion engine, all the above is totally irrelevant.

  16. Kyle O'Connor on July 21, 2021 at 8:38 pm

Never letting go of my first gen MR2! <3

  17. Enigmatic Nomadics on July 21, 2021 at 8:39 pm

Maybe I’m missing something. The entire car would never rotate instead on the wheel so the weight being further away would be negligible. I DO see how placing the weight closer to the traction point and more balance gained by being distributed more evenly throughout the vehicle would definitely have advantages in handling and performance but that’s another story.
By the way, EXCELLENT channel and graphics! I just found you guys and BOY do you explain concepts in a manner that’s easy to understand. Subbed.

  18. Jakob Holgersson on July 21, 2021 at 8:40 pm

The question I have is… Why don’t more people buy sports cars?
With urbanization and education levels at an all-time high, the need for practicality should be at an all-time low. With movies like The Fast and the Furious and the popularity of video games with licensed cars, shouldn’t more of these well-educated, well-paid people with small practical needs be flooding to dealers to buy a sports car?
And with people being ever more savvy with design and image and simultaneously ever more concerned with the environment, why the hell are they buying ugly gas guzzling SUV’s, trucks and crossovers instead?

Somebody tried to buy my AW11 in the Aldi parking lot this week. I just laughed and offered to take them for a ride sometime.

  21. The Driver's Line on July 21, 2021 at 8:46 pm

Short version, because the stock market and the finance industry requires increased profits per unit. In the 90s, something that was profitable and good marketing was fine. Now, it has to make a lot of money, and marketing is cheap thanks to Influencers, social media, and stuff like YouTube.

insults "boomers"…says "be kind". says he doesn’t know the physics so he’ll have someone else who knows the physics explain…that someone else completely screws it up. say what you will about "boomers", at least they know high school physics. and so do plenty of other people who are older…and younger than you. the donut media guys seem to be the kinds of guys who went straight through remedial everything, graduated with a house full of participation trophies, and never even went to a community college, but still think they know everything.

and just so you know, that explanation was actually justification for the car tipping up more, not accelerating more. and the real reason that a smaller moment can be good is to make your car more nimble or easier to turn. a larger moment can make the car more stable. this is why i usually don’t watch your videos…you guys are idiots. wait, let me fix it: you guys are rude, immature idiots with a dramatic lack self-awareness. there, that’s better.

maybe you should refrain from insulting people old enough to be my dad and instead go learn a little bit about cars before you set yourself up as an authority about them while telling people to "be kind." but hey, if you want to publicly be a pile of crap, don’t let me rain on your very public and crappy parade. i was that young and stupid once too…just not so publicly and not so stupid…and usually a lot more self-aware.

Dodge technically made a mid engine 1969 dodge charger although it was only one and it was for the movies

  28. Kristian Jonsson on July 21, 2021 at 8:50 pm

A real man wants the engine in the front, with the driver and the driven wheel at the back. Lotus Seven, Viper.

  29. Macht on July 21, 2021 at 8:52 pm

Dodge should do a Mid Engine 1000hp Viper 😬

The Rm19 project has been converted to the mr23t. With the developer of 2.3litre i4 from the focus range being brought to Hyundai……. Rumors are Hyundai is still gonna do it but make it a roadster style instead of a hatchback. And with the major success of their N brand why wouldn’t they?

  37. That Guy Before Tech on July 21, 2021 at 9:01 pm

MR2 would be a good comeback story.

  38. alfa romeo on July 21, 2021 at 9:01 pm

The engine in the alfa 4c was never specifically made for it.

The engine was also used in the alfa gulietta and mito QV

  39. Kristian Jonsson on July 21, 2021 at 9:01 pm

The advantage with a mid-engined configuration was not explained properly. The gain is not in the vertical plane, but in the horizontal plane. To keep the mass close to the middle to reduce the pendulum effect when the car change direction of travel. The mid-engined car will always be impractical and that why it is an low volume car.
Lotus Elise, the only not-that-expensive-one today

  40. tayl0rd on July 21, 2021 at 9:03 pm

Sooo… Other than it possibly being a hard sell, there’s no valid reason for manufacturers not to build affordable mid-engine cars. Also, if Ford were to ask all current Mustang owners if they would buy an affordable mid-engine Mustang, I bet nearly 100% of them would say yes. So, having an established design history isn’t a valid reason not to switch to mid-engine, either.

Where can we get the track for the “Chrome T-Shirt” ad? Shit is hard.

  44. Phat Toni on July 21, 2021 at 9:12 pm

The 4C’s engine is borrowed from a front wheel drive car, the giulietta QV. It’s expensive because of the carbon tub, not because of the engine. A base spec 4C coupe was also $55k MSRP, not $67k.
